This brown cow is curious about his visitor, as the camera captures the silky highlights of his coat. Cattle ranching is big business on the Big Island, location of one of the largest privately owned ranches in the United States. Cattle first came to Hawaii in 1790 when King Kamehameha was presented with a herd from Captain George Vancouver. In the early 1800’s, when King Kamehameha III visited California, he saw the impressive Mexican vaqueros. He invited them to come to Hawaii to become our first paniolo, the Hawaiian word for the “espanol” cowboys.
